Zhi Bai Ba Wei Wan - Black Pearl Anemarrhena, Phellodendron & Rehman Form pill 35g
Indications:
This formula treats the syndrome of Kidney Yin deficiency with Fire flaring, which is a complication of Kidney Yin deficiency, in which the clinical features of deficiency Heat or deficiency Fire predominate. The causes of this syndrome are the same as for Kidney Yin deficiency – see comments on Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula BP015). It should be noted that there is always some degree of deficiency Heat that accompanies Kidney Yin deficiency.
Signs & Symptoms:
In Zhi Bai Ba Wei Wan, the typical presentation is lower back and knee weakness with tinnitus or dizziness, night sweats, five-centre heat, dry mouth and throat, heat worse in the evening, possible low-grade fever, insomnia, scanty dark urine, and dry constipation, with a red tongue with little coating and a thin, rapid pulse.
Actions of the Main Herbs:
Shu Di Huang: Nourishes Kidney Yin and replenishes essence.
Shan Zhu Yu: Tonifies Liver and Kidney and stabilises essence.
Shan Yao: Strengthens Spleen and nourishes Yin.
Fu Ling: Drains Dampness and supports digestion.
Mu Dan Pi: Clears deficient Heat and cools Blood.
Ze Xie: Drains Dampness and clears Kidney Heat.
Zhi Mu: Clears Heat and nourishes Yin.
Huang Bai: Clears deficient Heat, especially from lower jiao.
Dosage & Course of Treatment:
Take 8–12 pills, three times daily, preferably after meals or as directed by a practitioner. Typically used short- to medium-term depending on the severity of fluid retention and response to treatment.

Cautions & Contraindications:
Not suitable for individuals with Yin deficiency with dryness or without fluid retention. Use with caution in those with frequent urination due to deficiency rather than excess. Not appropriate for long-term use without practitioner supervision. Avoid use during pregnancy unless prescribed by a qualified practitioner.
