Zhi Sou San (Jia Wei) - Black Pearl Platycodon and Stemona Formula pill 40g
Indications:
External Wind invasion affecting the Lung, especially Wind-Heat or Wind-Cold patterns presenting with cough, often with lingering symptoms, mild heat, or irritation in the throat and lungs.
Signs & Symptoms:
Cough (dry or with mild phlegm), throat irritation or itchiness, sore throat, mild fever or aversion to wind, nasal congestion, hoarseness, possible slight chills, thin white or yellowish coating on the tongue, and a floating or rapid pulse. In chronic or “jia wei” (modified) cases, symptoms may persist after an initial illness.
Actions of the Main Herbs:
Zi Wan (Aster root) moistens the Lungs, stops cough, and resolves phlegm.
Bai Bu (Stemona root) suppresses cough and alleviates irritation in the respiratory tract.
Jie Geng (Platycodon root) opens and disseminates Lung Qi, helps guide herbs upward to the Lung, and expels phlegm.
Chen Pi (Tangerine peel) regulates Qi, dries Dampness, and helps resolve phlegm accumulation.
Jing Jie (Schizonepeta herb) releases the exterior and disperses Wind.
Bo He (Mint) lightly disperses Wind-Heat and clears the throat.
Gan Cao (Licorice root) harmonizes the formula, moistens the Lung, and relieves throat irritation.
In the “Jia Wei” (modified) version, additional herbs may be included depending on presentation (e.g., herbs to clear Heat, resolve more phlegm, or further soothe the throat).
Dosage & Course of Treatment:
Take 8–12 pills, three times daily, preferably after meals or as directed by a practitioner. Typically used short-term for acute or subacute cough, or as a modifying formula tailored to persistent symptoms.
