Indications:
Wind-Cold with Dampness obstructing the nasal passages, commonly associated with chronic or acute sinus congestion, allergic rhinitis, or sinusitis characterized by nasal blockage and discharge.
Signs & Symptoms:
Nasal congestion with difficulty breathing through the nose, thick or profuse nasal discharge (white or slightly yellow), sinus pressure or pain (especially in the forehead or between the eyes), diminished sense of smell, headache, post-nasal drip, sneezing, and a sensation of heaviness in the head. Tongue may have a thin white or greasy coating; pulse may be floating or slippery.
Actions of the Main Herbs:
Xin Yi Hua (Magnolia flower bud) opens the nasal passages, disperses Wind, and relieves nasal congestion.
Cang Er Zi (Xanthium fruit) dispels Wind, dries Dampness, and alleviates nasal obstruction and sinus symptoms.
Xi Xin (Asarum root) warms the channels, disperses Cold, and helps relieve sinus blockage and pain.
Bai Zhi (Angelica root) expels Wind, alleviates headache, and opens the orifices, especially in the frontal sinus area.
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum root) moves Qi and Blood, helping relieve headache and improve circulation to the head.
Dosage & Course of Treatment:
Take 8–12 pills, three times daily, preferably after meals or as directed by a practitioner. Typically used short-term during acute or subacute sinus and nasal congestion episodes.
