BU ZHONG YI QI WAN – GINSENG & ASTRAGALUS FORMULA
Historical Background:
This classical formula was developed by Li Gao (also known as Li Dong-yuan) and was first recorded in Treatise on the Differentiation of Endogenous and Exogenous Injuries (Nei Wai Shang Bian Huo Lun) in 1247. Its clinical applications were further detailed in his later work, Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach (Pi Wei Lun), which expanded on its use in the treatment of Spleen and Stomach deficiency patterns.
Synergistic Actions of the Herbs:
• Tonify Spleen Qi:
Astragalus root (Huang Qi), Codonopsis root (Dang Shen), Atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu), Ziziphus fruit (Da Zao), fresh Ginger rhizome (Sheng Jiang), and Prepared Licorice root (Zhi Gan Cao)
• Raise Spleen Yang Qi:
Bupleurum root (Chai Hu), Actaea rhizome (Sheng Ma), Astragalus root (Huang Qi), and Codonopsis root (Dang Shen)
• Nourish Blood and support Qi:
Angelica root (Dang Gui) nourishes the Blood and harmonises Qi and Blood, thereby supporting overall Qi tonification
• Regulate Qi and harmonise the Middle Jiao:
Citrus fruit peel (Chen Pi) promotes normal Qi movement in the Spleen and Stomach, supporting digestion and absorption of the rich tonic herbs within the formula

– Atractylodes macrocephala, rhizome (白術) — 53.9 mg
– Angelica polymorpha, root (當歸) — 32.1 mg
– Glycyrrhiza uralensis, root (甘草) — 32.1 mg
– Actaea cimicifuga, rhizome (升麻) — 32.1 mg
– Bupleurum falcatum, root (柴胡) — 32.1 mg
– Citrus reticulata, fruit peel (陳皮) — 21.3 mg
– Zingiber officinale, fresh rhizome (生薑) — 21.3 mg
– Ziziphus jujuba, fruit (大棗) — 21.3 mg

Signs & Symptoms:
General debility and weakness, chronic fatigue, poor appetite, chronic diarrhea or loose stools, spontaneous sweating, dyspnoea, muscular weakness or atrophy, hypotension, haemorrhoids, prolapse of internal organs (such as uterine or rectal prolapse, gastroptosis), chronic pharyngitis, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, side effects associated with chemotherapy, and general debility following severe or prolonged illness.
Dosage & Course of Treatment:
Take 30–40 pills twice daily, 30–60 minutes away from food. In more severe cases, the dosage may be increased by up to 50%, such as 50 pills twice daily or 30–40 pills three times daily. Typical treatment duration is 2–6 months.
Cautions & Contraindications:
Use with caution in patients taking anticoagulant medications (including heparin, warfarin, or aspirin). When used alongside antibiotics, allow at least 90 minutes between doses. This formula is not recommended for cases involving Liver Yang rising or headaches due to excess Heat or Fire.
